And last but not least of our intrepid heroes from book one of the Rise of Thruum series is Bronwick the half-orc barbarian. Now any true fantasy role player knows you always want a half -orc barbarian in your party. They are the killing machines, right? Well, Bronwick definitely fits that mold. But he's much more than just an orc attack dog. With Bronwick we get a view of the simple side. He represents a peek at the other side of the door. He is the mixed-heritage second class citizen in Villinsk. Orcs are a common enemy of the nation. The orc tribes of the wilds have waged war against the magical nation on more than one occasion in their sordid history. That places him in a precarious position. Luckily, Bronwick is too dumb to realize or care. He's also the simpleton of the group. But he has a heart of gold.
I like the idea of the big dumb friend. The protector you never asked for but you're glad you got. I also like his genuine caring nature. He's a good guy that is doing his best to help support his new friends. He's especially supportive since they accepted him without hesitation. That says a lot to this big musclebound lug.
There's another subtle element to Bronwick. He was raised by a dominant mother. His mother is named the chieftain of his tribe. That's a whole new arena in orc culture on EL where everything is male dominated. It just means he's got a different perspective with the male-female, human-orc dynamic. Bronwick is a well-rounded killing machine with layers, like an onion or something. 😂🤷♂️
